To parents of Third Grade students at CCE, Days of grades with A, B, C, and so on are over in third grade. This is going to be a tough and trying transition. Due to the shift of the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) (http://www.corestandards.org/), LEUSD has generated a report card to reflect the new standards and assessments. This report card is a living document and may change as CCSS are implemented throughout the year. The grading on the new report card is as follows: 3- Meeting Grade Level Standards; 2- Approaching Standards; 1- Not meeting Standards; x-Standard not yet introduced. To avoid any confusion, a 3 indicates that your child is consistently demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of the standard that has been taught for each trimester. A 2 indicates that your child is working toward but not consistently demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of the standard that has been taught for each trimester. A 1 is a child who cannot or has a difficult time demonstrating and showing their understanding of the standard that has been taught for each trimester. As you have noticed the typical tests have not been coming home. Teachers are using a variety of assessments but in a variety of different ways. Some examples are peer work, informal teacher observation, class work, class discussions, presentations, journals, and written assessments. These various forms are requiring students to demonstrate their understanding in the form of a “writing to explain.” This means that they have to show a higher level of critical thinking and depth of knowledge. We ask of you to be patient and show understanding that this is a new journey for all. The plan of CCSS is to move all students through this 1, 2, 3 process. Our goal is to encourage success through this growth process.
Thank you for your time, patience, and commitment to your child’s future,
